On 2 June, the International Day of the Strong will be celebrated for the 21st time!

This cross-border event highlights the peaceful use of former military buildings, informs local visitors and emphasises international affinities.
This year Franzensfeste is participating for the first time with an open day and a wide range of guided tours of the fortress!

We invite you to participate in our guided tours and walks to learn more about this impressive fortress and its fascinating history. Join us and discover the past in an exciting way!

 

Upper Fortress: visitors have the opportunity to take a guided tour of the Upper Fortress. You walk up 452 underground steps to the Upper Fortress, from where you have a magnificent view over the valley and learn a lot about the history of the fortress.
In German and Italian: 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Catering for soldiers: This is about how soldiers were received in the fortress, what they ate and how they were supplied. During the visit you will also see the historical bakery.
In German: 1.00 p.m.; in Italian: 1.45 p.m.

The gold gallery: The visit is about the legendary fortress gold. It tells how on 16 December 1943, 127.5 tonnes of gold in Italian currency, packed in barrels and sealed boxes, were stored in a rock gallery under the central fortress.

Fighting in the 19th century: the military strategies, weapons and tactics used at the time are analysed. The historical and strategic reasons why fortresses such as this were built are also explained.
